Eagles – Hotel California – MTV Live 1994
There are songs that make me wonder if there are people who don't like them. One of these songs is Hotel California. The live recording from 1994 impresses with its perfection.
In 1994, music was actually still being played on MTV – the channel is perhaps better known to the younger generation for strange talk shows or the admittedly very funny Ridiculousness. The 90s were a carefree time shortly after perestroika and before the bitter realization that we were slowly destroying the earth as we knew it and had inhabited it for several thousand years by burning fossil fuels. The Eagles gave another concert 14 years after their last live concert. Just on MTV. The “Unplugged” recording is outstanding and impresses with its spatiality and clear positioning of the instruments, which is why I like to use it to present the soundboard.
The question of why you can never leave the hotel has led to several interpretations, which is certainly due to the zeitgeist of the 70s. Whether it is a sect or commune (such as the Manson family) or drug addiction or a closed institution, it is always difficult to leave. Don Felder tells the story of how the song came about in the following video.
