Dillon – Thirteen Thirtyfive
Thirteen Thirtyfive emerged from a cascade of allusions on Dillon's debut album. I like to use the clear, reduced musical tracks to test sound systems/speakers.
Every artist needs inspiration and often naturally draws it from other artists, changing it a little or using elements of others for their own purposes. When Jens Lekman built his song "Pocketful of money" on Beat Happening's track "Gravedigger Blues," Dillon wrote a poem and listened to Jens Lekman's song for days. The poem fit perfectly with his sound. And so, "Gravedigger Blues" somehow became Thirteen Thirtyfive.
She wrote the lyrics at around 17 years old. Why, how, and for what reasons, she doesn't tell us in interviews. The debut album was released on November 21, 2011. It features a selection of tracks she had written in the years prior. "Thirteen Thirtyfive" begins with her slightly husky voice, finger snaps, and the onset of the piano. The minimalism is perfect for hearing the smallest nuances. This has been particularly important to me since the weekend, as the soundbar received a hardware upgrade to the next – outstanding – version. The sound is now even more transparent and puts music in its best form. If only you could hear it __ Her voice is sometimes said to resemble Björk's, which probably originates more from the song "Tip Tapping," which some find sounds similar to Björk's song "It’s oh so quiet." Dillon's voice, however, sounds completely different.
I personally like a few other tracks from the album, too. For example, "Undying need to Scream" with the screeching, scratchy, and squeaky noises, or "Abrupt Clarity" with the line "The closer I got, the less I could feel - the louder it got, the more it seemed real" on an endless loop.
Measured by downloads, Thirteen Thirtyfive is her absolute most successful song. The fate of the hit single. It often stands alone, and no one knows the entire body of work.
