Pulp – This is hardcore
A Big Band sound underpinning a porn shoot. Who comes up with something like that? Amidst songs about aging, panic attacks, and addiction, one finds oneself in the swansong of Britpop.
The Big Band sound dates back to 1966 and is by Peter Thomas, a German film composer who became known to the general public through his arrangements for Jerry Cotton and Edgar Wallace films. He also composed soundtracks for "Derrick," "Der Alte," and many other films such as "Winnetou and Old Firehand." In "This is Hardcore," Pulp uses a sample from the track "Bolero on the Moon Rocks" from the soundtrack of the series "Raumpatrouille" (Space Patrol). Although the main theme of the song is pornography, the music video director Doug Nichol re-filmed scenes from 60s and 70s Film Noir movies, featuring the band members, among others.
Pulp is a Britpop band founded by the shy, lanky, and thick-glasses-wearing Jarvis Cocker. The band's history can be followed in the video "Pulp: A Film About Life, Death and Supermarkets." Of their four studio albums, "This is Hardcore" is the third and already belongs to the band's late work towards the end of the Britpop hype. Hits like "Common People" should be familiar to everyone. As always, I love the drama in "This is Hardcore." I am a big fan of the drama __
